How to Get a Work Permit for Turkey. If you plan to travel and stay in Turkey, chances is that you will need to find a source of income. This means getting to know all the steps involved in applying for a work permit. Fortunately, the process isn't very complicated, and as long as you know what the steps are, you should get a valid Turkish work permit in a short time.

How to get a work permit for turkey

First, it's important to know that work permits are only issued by Turkish Ministry of Labor. Also, it's always best to apply for your work permit concurrent to your work visa.

What this means is that you will be required to submit your work visa application at the Turkish embassy/consulate in your home country. This action will prompt your employer to submit the necessary documents to the MLSS.

The above steps are for people who are applying for a Turkish work permit from outside Turkey. Nevertheless, one can still apply for a work permit when they are in Turkey.

As a foreigner with a residential permit that is valid for at least 6 months, you can apply for a work permit while in the country. However, if you entered Turkey as a tourist, you won't have the chance to apply for a work permit.

The application process


Irrespective of whether or not you're applying for a Turkish work permit from outside or inside the country, you will need to show proof of an employment contract or offer from your prospective employer.

The moment you and the person employing you have submitted the relevant documents to the MLSS, they will be preceded in a period of 90 days.

If the application is accepted, you will have to travel in person to the Turkish embassy to have both your work visa and permit stamped inside your passport.

However, if you're applying for a work permit when you're inside Turkey, you will need to visit MLSS offices situated in Ankara to pick up your visa and permit.

Also, it's important that you should apply for a residence permit within one month of your arrival in Turkey. This is something you can do at the Foreigner's Branch of a police station closest to your employer.

Furthermore, it's important to note that Turkish authorities will not allow you to work in the country until you've acquired a residential permit, a visa and work permit.

Independent work permits in Turkey

If you've been working in Turkey for the last 5 years (legally), you are eligible to apply for what is called an independent work permit. This type of work permit gives you the authority of working in the country as a self-employed individual. So you will definitely need this permit if you want to start your business in Turkey.

Also, once you've acquired your work permit, you will need to renew it after a period of one year. This is often done within 2 and 1/2 months of the stated expiry date of the permit. The new permit will be valid for 2 years. If you apply the third time, it will be valid for 3 years and so on.
